Tools: the grade ladder

A pickaxe, an axe and a fishing rod each come in 14 grades, the same 14 as armor: bronze, emerald, diamond, dragonstone, onyx, starfall, eclipse, nova, singularity, celestial, voidforged, penumbra, stormward, chrono. A better tool lets you gather more, faster.

Getting started

  • Hold it. A pickaxe, axe or rod goes in your weapon slot. One in your bag does nothing.
  • Buy one at the Prize Counter. The first 6 grades are cheap for what they are; the top two are not.
  • Or make one at the anvil: two bars for a pickaxe or an axe, one for a rod.

How it works

  • The rock decides. A rock, tree or spot needs a tool one grade below its own, or better. Emerald ore needs a bronze pickaxe and diamond ore an emerald one, so you can always make the tool from ore you can already mine.
  • A tool of the thing's own grade works it faster.
  • A better tool is faster at everything below it too, so it's never wasted on easy work.
  • The top grades ask for the tool below them. A Stormward rock is worked with the grade under it. A new grade never raises the bar on rocks you could already mine, and you're never asked for a pickaxe that needs its own ore to make.

Tips

  • While you're holding a tool, you're not holding a weapon. That's the only cost of the ladder.
