Smithing
Smelt ore into bars at a furnace, then hammer bars into gear at an anvil. You start by burning logs.

Getting started
- At Smithing 1 you can't make a bar or any gear yet. Everything needs level 10. This is the most common question about the skill.
- Start by burning logs. Take logs to the furnace in the Yard's north court and it turns them into charcoal. That's the only Smithing 1 job.
- Charcoal is the fuel every smelt needs, so the logs you burn on the way to level 10 aren't wasted.
- Level 10 is 1,154 xp: about 230 ordinary logs, or far fewer if you're already cutting something better.

Bars
Ore + charcoal → bar, at the furnace. Bars → gear, at the anvil. Both are in the Yard's north court, just above the Crypt stairs.

What a piece costs
| Piece | Bars | xp at bronze |
|---|---|---|
| Cuirass | 5 | 100 |
| Greaves, shield, maul, amulet | 3 | 60 |
| Helm, longsword, ring | 2 | 40 |
| Boots, gloves, gladius | 1 | 20 |
Each grade needs the Smithing level of its gear tier: bronze 10, emerald 20, diamond 30, dragonstone 40, onyx 50, starfall 60, eclipse 70, nova 80, singularity 90, celestial 99, voidforged 105, penumbra 110, stormward 115, chrono 120.
How it works
- You don't choose what to make. The furnace and the anvil always make the best thing you can from what's in your bag. That's why a furnace with logs and ore burns, smelts, burns and smelts by itself.
- Burning has a small chance to fail and use up the log. That's normal, and it keeps going.
- The top of the ladder needs more than ore. Onyx needs grimstone, eclipse needs voidglass, and starfall, nova and singularity each need a finished bar of the tier below. A Singularity bar is a Nova bar is an Eclipse bar, all the way down, so the last stretch is a chain, not a grind, and the charcoal bill climbs with it.
Raising a piece
The anvil doesn't reforge anymore. A Kindled Diamond at the Gem Bench raises a piece one level, up to +3, and never fails or breaks it. A piece already at +4 from before (an Old Hand) keeps it. Temper, Flux, Coral inlay and the Master's seal were traded in for Kindled Diamonds (one for every four, a seal one for every two).
Tips
- Smithing beats buying. A full eclipse set from Bom's counter (helm, body, legs, shield, boots, gloves, longsword, ring and amulet) costs 1,003,800 tickets. Smithing it takes 22 eclipse bars. Once you have a furnace and an anvil, there's no good reason to buy gear again.
- Smith to wear it, not to sell it. Bom buys smithed gear back for an eighth of his shelf price and never more than 2,500 a piece, reforged or not. The big pieces from onyx up all hit that ceiling, and from nova up the bars are worth more sold on their own than the finished piece.
