Getting started

Since v1.1, gems are rarer and stay with whoever finds them: a quarter as many drop from every source, and gems can't be traded or put on the Exchange. A gem you find is yours to sort and set.

There are 14 skilling stones, each tied to one skill and found while you train it.
Skilling gems: from level 60 in a skill, every action in it has a 0.017% chance of that skill's gem.
Combat gems are retired (1.9): they give no bonus and no longer drop. Every sorted one was refunded at a Sorter roll plus its sell price, and every combat setting at its full price. The Gem Sorter buys an unsorted one for 1,500 tickets.
Only the best 2 of any one gem count in the bag, so different stones beat copies.

The four you can mine

Four gems ( Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Opal) also come out of ore, at any Mining level, and are fletched into arrow tips. Every ore you get has a small chance to come with a gem: 1.4%, the same for every gem and at any level. Which gem depends on the ore: the cheap ores give rubies, the top ores give opals.

Tips

More gems: the Frost ward page (Wizardry 84) makes them turn up 25/40/50% more often by tier, and so does a Crystal Crab (+50%) or a Diamond Crab (+100%) or a Starling (+10%) or a Supernova (+18%) or a Pebble (+5%) following you. A rock gives the same chance on every ore, so a vein that never runs dry is the best place to stand.
