World events

Three surprise events happen in the world every day, once each, at random times. Anyone can join, and each one pays by how much you put in.

On this page: Getting started · When they happen · Shooting Stars · Wanted! · The Jackpot Thief

Getting started

  • Watch for them. Each day brings two of a Shooting Star, a Wanted poster and the Jackpot Thief, plus a Gold Rush or the Big Sale (Gold Rush and the Big Sale).
  • When one starts, CASINO says so in chat, the Events button at the top of the screen lights up, and the world map puts a pin on its area.
  • The Events window (that button, or /events in chat) shows what's on now and what's still to come today.

When they happen

Between noon and midnight, Chicago time. Those 12 hours are split into three equal stretches, and the three events are dealt into them in random order. Each one starts at least 30 minutes in from either end of its stretch, so no two ever land within an hour of each other.

Shooting Stars

  • You get a warning. 10 minutes before it lands, CASINO hints at where: a direction, never the exact spot ("in the woods north of the Yard", "out over the marshes", "somewhere among the graves"…).
  • It can come down in The Gloam, The Lantern Mire, The Boneyard, Cloudreach, The Golden Sands, The Thunderhead, The Trailer Park, The Boardwalk, The Primeval Valley, The Frozen Reach, or (13% of the time) in the Wilderness, "somewhere dangerous", where every fragment counts double. Never in the Yard: it's crowded enough.
  • Mine it with a pickaxe. A star lands at a tier from 1 to 9, set by the best miner online, and tier N needs Mining 10×N.
  • Every swing chips a piece off. When a tier's worth is gone, it cracks down a tier, and anyone with the lower level can join in. The more people swinging, the bigger each tier is. It cools and disappears after 60 minutes.

4402 (4 in the Wilderness)54
3302 (4 in the Wilderness)43
2201 (2 in the Wilderness)32

Each person can get at most 400 fragments from a star (800 in the Wilderness). Keep swinging past that and the Mining xp still counts. About 0.017% of swings turn up a Starling egg, which hatches into a Starling.

Wanted!

  • One poster a day goes up on the Bounty Board in the Yard, west of the north road. It names a monster turned menace: a named copy of an ordinary one from that map, with 6 times the health (never less than a minimum for its band), glowing red so you can find it. It has 60 minutes before it gets away.
  • The band changes every day: low, middle, high. If nobody online can fight in that day's band when the poster goes up, it drops a band, so even a quiet day gets a poster someone can take.
  • Everyone shares it. Anyone can hit it, no matter who hit first. When it falls, the bounty is split by damage: your share is your part of the damage, never less than 3% of the bounty.
  • At a quarter of its health it gets furious and hits 30% harder. If it gets away, the poster is stamped ESCAPED and the next bounty is 25% bigger, up to double.
  • Take 10 posters (be one of the hunters when it falls) and you earn the title « Bounty Hunter », worn from the Store's Name tab. It's never sold.

The Jackpot Thief

  • A goblin grabs a sack of the slots' Jackpot and runs. The sack holds 30,000 to 50,000 tickets: 10% of it is the Jackpot's, and the house puts in the rest. He shows up on a map with people on it, never the Yard.
  • He runs from people. Get close and he heads for open ground; corner him and he jumps clear. He doesn't fight back.
  • He counts hits, not damage. With one of you on him he takes 40 hits, and every other person who joins adds 25, up to 200 (40 for one of you, 140 for five). Every 10 hits he gets dizzy for 3 seconds and stands still.
  • Every hit spills 1.5% of the sack onto the ground as tickets anyone can pick up, for a minute, until the sack is down to a fifth. That last fifth goes to whoever lands the last hit.
  • He hops. Every minute he dives down a hole and pops up on another map with people on it (The Gloam, The Lantern Mire, The Boneyard, Cloudreach, The Golden Sands, The Thunderhead, The Trailer Park, The Boardwalk, The Primeval Valley, The Frozen Reach), and CASINO says where. After 5 hops he's gone for good, and the Jackpot gets back what it lent (as much as the sack still holds); the house's part is gone with him.
